Dan can be best described as being his own worst enemy. Dan refuses to back down from any fight, usually due to overconfidence, though this easily turns out to be arrogance or sheer stupidity. Although weak, Dan seems to still be somewhat intelligent and knowledgeable, possessing some knowledge of fighting styles; he acknowledges that E. Honda uses moves which wouldn't actually be considered legal in Sumo (with the only other people noting are Rufus and Gouken). Despite his miserable record of losses, Dan still believes himself to be the superior fighter; his ego is so bloated that he even sometimes tries to steal credit for other people's actions. When being rescued by Ryu and Sakura from an engulfing explosion, Dan announces that it was his "awesome power" that saved everyone from perishing. Regardless, Dan strives to live up to his father's good name despite falling short of it. Despite being portrayed as an arrogant and cocky man, Dan is ultimately good-natured and thoughtful; as an example, he says in his quote against T. Hawk that he can relate to being homeless and "totally feels his pain" (despite T. Hawk not minding). Dan sees himself as a fatherly figure and mentor to his friend Sakura, constantly advising her on fighting techniques, though Sakura doesn't take his 'expertise' seriously, seeing him simply as a humorous and fun guy to be with. He also tends to lecture Blanka, his other friend, about "real manhood" and the Saikyo arts, much to Blanka's bemusement; both are close friends, strangely enough. Recently Dan retains his goofy and showboating attitude, but he appears more knowledgeable and less prone to poor decisions. One such example is settling his bills, and even planning branches and expansions for his dojo; this may also be due to the help of his younger sister Yuriko. Dan has a deep dislike of Ryu and Ken, mostly on the grounds of them being the more revered fighters and Ken's "ladies man" persona. He has also been shown to be quite unpopular with the other characters, usually because they tend to have little patience for his antics. Dan is a well-built but slightly shorter man with a pink gi that symbolizes his self-made Saikyo style. His outfit is tattered at the sleeves, sleeveless, and he wears a black undershirt and fingerless gloves. He has long brown hair, a ponytail, and thick eyebrows that emphasize his exaggerated expressions. His confident grin rarely leaves his face, even in the face of certain defeat. The Japanese kanji for “Saikyo” is proudly displayed on his back, marking both his pride and his parody. Though his stance and movements may seem unrefined, his energy and personality fill every space he enters, making Dan impossible to ignore.

Dan's father, Go, was a mixed martial artist and a rival of Sagat. Go gouged out Sagat's right eye and Sagat beat him to death in retaliation. Dan sought revenge on Sagat, training to become a fighter, but was expelled from Gouken's dojo when his motivations were learned. Undeterred, Dan set out on his own path, developing Saikyo-ryu (“The Strongest Style”) from scraps of techniques he had learned and improvised. Though far from perfect, Dan’s enthusiasm and unshakable self-confidence turned his failures into fuel. He entered the Street Fighter tournaments with dreams of proving his style to the world and redeeming his family name. While his abilities are often mocked, his heart and determination are genuine. Over time, Dan’s unwavering spirit—even in defeat—has earned him the respect of a few unlikely peers, and he continues to promote Saikyo-ryu with boundless optimism and theatrical flair.
