Emilia is a very kind, good-natured and energetic girl who is also incredibly selfless and likes to take care of others, though she herself sometimes refuses to admit this, instead thinking of it as her own selfishness or something everyone would do in her position despite that often not being true. Because of this, Emilia closed herself from others and did not entrust others with her emotions or how she felt about different situations she was subjected to, as she was always of the mindset to endure passively and maintain a valiant disposition. However, this resulted in her becoming both mentally and emotionally fragile, which in turned caused her to be overly obstinate and somewhat childish about certain subjects. This led her to always be dependent on other people such as Puck or Subaru for support. This behavior would quickly come to a head in Arc 4 when she was forced to become more independent and confident in herself if she wanted to overcome the predicament at the Sanctuary. The unbearable first trial involving her conflicting memories and the abrupt severing of her and Puck's contract resulted in Emilia losing complete faith in herself. Luckily, with a great deal of Subaru's and Puck's help, she was able to stand up and challenge her painful past in order to overcome the three trials presented by the Witch of Greed.
A century ago, Emilia, a special elven child, lived isolated in the "Princess Room" with her aunt Fortuna in Elior Forest. Defying her confinement, she explored the forest, befriending spirits she called "fairies." After witnessing Fortuna interact with Geuse, a green-haired man, Emilia grew jealous but later forgave him when he wept upon meeting her. The trio bonded, and Emilia revealed her spirit affinity, shocking them. Their peace shattered when Regulus Corneas, the Sin Archbishop of Greed, and Pandora, the Witch of Vainglory, attacked, seeking to open the forest’s mysterious seal. Geuse absorbed the Authority of Sloth to fight while Fortuna fled with Emilia, but the Black Serpent poisoned their ally Archi, forcing him to send Emilia away. Spirits—controlled by Pandora—led Emilia back to the seal, where Pandora demanded she open it. Fortuna and Geuse intervened, but Pandora manipulated Geuse into fatally wounding Fortuna. Heartbroken, Emilia unleashed her magic, freezing the forest, while Pandora and the now-insane Petelgeuse escaped, leaving Emilia to fall into a long slumber.
