During a laboratory accident involving a nuclear reactor, Octavius was exposed to massive radiation and permanently fused to a set of advanced mechanical tentacles he had designed to safely manipulate hazardous materials. The accident damaged his nervous system and mental stability, amplifying his ego and resentment.
