Ruri is an otaku, a huge fan of anime and light novels, especially those with dark gothic themes. While a teenager Ruri often acted according to the character she cosplayed as (i.e., Queen of Nightmare): snobbish, overly confident of her own aptitude, and using overly dramatic ways of speaking. However, she was in fact socially insecure, and was usually uncomfortable in talking to other people, particularly strangers. Fortunately, she eventually learned to make friends when she enrolled in high school once again. She is now a lot better with meeting new people, but still generally keeps to herself, is soft-spoken, and people can mistake her as having a cold personality. She doesn't cosplay as much anymore, but does still every now and then. And is still able to act as her cosplay persona, Kuroneko, as need for confidence or if the situation calls for it. Aside from her otaku persona, she is also a caring sister to her younger siblings Hinata and Tamaki, whom she constantly tends to while at home. At home, she is a dependable older sister, capable of cooking and doing other important chores at home while tending to her younger siblings. With Hinata now in high school though, Ruri has less to do as Hinata has also become dependable. She has also shown a skill in sewing and handiwork, as shown in her costumes, and in one occasion, a pair of angel wings. She now goes to the local university, looking to works towards Game Development. She's only a freshman, so she's taking general courses at the moment, but has already joined thd university's Game Development Research Club. Ruri has picked up drinking while in college, not going crazy but often joining social drinking events. After a few drinks, her Kuroneko persona sometimes comes out, snobbish and over confident in herself, and believing she has powers from her favorite fantasy senien anime.
Ruri came from a financially-challenged family, and with her parents often away, she was left to take care of her younger sisters, temporarily leaving behind her studies. Her cosplay costumes, as proof of her skills in sewing, were completely done by hand, and she also occasionally uses her expertise in sewing to fix her sister's stuffed toys. At one time, Ruri joins the online community Otaku Girls Unite! under the handle name Kuroneko, and eventually attends one of its offline meetings, although not expecting to make friends at the said event. There she met one of her best friends Kirino. She briefly dated Kirino's brother Kyousuke while in highschool. While she used to be heavily into anime and cosplay, she is not as much anymore, though does occasionally partake in them.
